Civic Center Commercial Project Ready to RFP for EIR Consultant

• Whole Food Market to Anchor Shopping Complex

The incessant speculation about a Whole Foods Market coming to Malibu was certainly not dispelled when a proposed Civic Center project is called Whole Foods in the Park.
The Malibu City Council is poised next week to approve a request for a proposal for a consultant to do an Environmental Impact Report for the development to be located at 23401 Civic Center Way.
Planners indicate the proposal call for a Whole Foods Market-anchored shopping center, including additional community and visitor-oriented commercial tenant spaces, outdoor dining and pedestrian and open space amenities.
The project is proposed for two parcels totaling 5.88 acres on the northwest corner of Civic Center Way and Cross Creek Road where the community skate-board park is currently located.
The proposal consists of about 38,425 square feet of commercial space in five buildings, including a 25,540 square foot Whole Foods Market building, and 13,878 square feet of additional retail space in four separate detached structures.
Plans indicate approximately 64,942 square feet of the site would be dedicated to landscape and open space, including courtyards, an accessible play area with a sensory playground, water features, and native plantings.
Rather than construct their own onsite wastewater treatment plant, the developers propose hooking up to the city’s proposed wastewater treatment plant that is still in the planning stage.
If this last condition turns out to mean that the Whole Foods in the Park project may be several years and a similar number of court cases away from completion, the speculation about the coming of the comestible purveyor to Malibu may continue for quite a while longer.
