SMMUSD Board Selects Final Choice for the District’s Latest Superintendent

• Negotiations and Reference Checks Are Currently in Process

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board of education met in closed session last weekend to interview potential candidates to replace retiring district superintendent, Tim Cuneo.
Board president Jose Escarce told the Malibu Surfside News that the board was “extremely pleased with the qualifications and qualities of the candidates we interviewed.”
“The board has selected a final candidate and we are in the process of validating our decision through additional reference checks and a site visit,” Escarce said. “After that, we will negotiate a contract and we will make a public announcement when the process is completed.”
Community members were invited to town hall meetings in Santa Monica and Malibu in January to discuss what characteristics they would like to see in a superintendent.
Board members solicited input in response to the prompt, “What personal and professional qualities for an incoming superintendent will be a match for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District?”
Cuneo came to the district as interim superintendent in 2008, after superintendent Dianne Talarico left abruptly after less than two years.
Cuneo agreed to accept the position of permanent superintendent in 2009, but announced in September 2010 that he intended to retire in June, when his contract with the district ends.
The executive search firm Leadership Associates was paid $28,500 for their services in locating a qualified candidate for the position.
The new superintendent’s start date is set for July 1, 2011.
