Balloting Underway to Choose Official Song for the City of Malibu

• Ballots Were Printed in Fall Recreation Guide Mailed to City Addresses, Can Be Downloaded from City’s Website or Picked Up in Person at City Hall

Voting for one of the five finalists for Official Malibu City Song started Aug. 1. Official ballots will be accepted through Aug. 31.
The official ballot was included in the city’s fall recreation guide that was mailed to all Malibu addresses on July 29. Ballots can also be downloaded from the city’s website or picked up in person at City Hall or Malibu Bluffs Park for mailing or personal drop-off.
The City of Malibu kicked off its “Official City Song Contest” in March 2011, inviting musicians to submit songs that they thought represented Malibu.
Contestants agreed to grant the city all rights to the music. The song is expected to become a key part of the Malibu promotional effort.
The idea of the contest was presented to the city council some 10 months earlier when the Kathy and Rick Henn family performed its song at a council meeting. It is one of the final five.
During the interim, city staff developed a contest outline and guidelines, and then launched the competition.
Staff reports that “a variety of songs” were submitted and a panel of five local judges narrowed the list down to the top five finalists, whose entries are now available for free download and online listening at the municipal website:
The five finalists are:

“Hey Malibu” (MP3 format - 4036kb) Artist, Music, and Lyrics by Holly Christina
“Home, Malibu” (MP3 format - 7475kb) Artist, Music, and Lyrics by Andy Harper
“Malibu We Love You” (MP3 format - 6668kb) Artist, Music and Lyrics by Shaunna L. Zeidler

“My Beloved Malibu” (MP3 format - 4032kb) Band: The Malibooz. Music and Lyrics by John Zambetti
The five finalists will perform their songs live at the Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, Sept. 4, and then the winner of the community balloting will be announced.
