Proponents of Separate Malibu School District Expect Update at this Week’s Board Meeting

• Malibu Advocacy Group Urges Large Turnout on Thursday

BY ANNE SOBLE

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will hold its regular board of education meeting on Thursday, May 3, in the Zuma Conference Room at Malibu City Hall.
The board will meet in closed session from approximately 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., primarily on personnel related matters.
The public meeting is expected to get underway at 6 p.m. and will include a budget update, the Measure R parcel tax rate, and the discussion of the district’s “hate-motivated behavior” policy.
Of key interest to Malibu advocates of “unification”—the formation of a separate Malibu school district—is an anticipated preliminary report by district Chief Financial Officer Jan Maez on the viability of district bifurcation.
The Maez report is expected to be presented at about 7:30 p.m. but meeting agendas don’t always adhere to a rigid schedule.
Members of the pro-separation group Advocates for Malibu Public Schools indicate on their website that they “expect this report to be lukewarm at best, highlighting all of the challenges we all know exist.”
However, AMPS nevertheless emphasizes the importance of a large turnout at the meeting because “[it] is important that we show the school board that Malibu is watching their choices and actions. What is important is that the school board sees a room full of passionate Malibuites [who are] making their presence known.”
In addition, the group states, “Showing up Thursday sends the school board a clear message that we are staying attentive and that our needs need to be included in their calculations.”
The AMPS website concludes, “The school board is very sensitive to numbers attending meetings. This meeting is in Malibu and important to the quality of our children’s education!”
