Council Implements Two-Hour Parking on Cross Creek Road

• Wants More Parking for Store Patrons

The Malibu City Council, at its meeting last week, agreed to limit parking to two hours on Cross Creek Road from Pacific Coast Highway to Civic Center Way.
The city’s Public Works Commission made the recommendation for installing the two-hour limit.
City officials maintain the unrestricted parking along Cross Creek Road is being abused by employees of the local businesses or visitors to the area.
“With minimal parking turnover, patrons of the Civic Center area businesses [which includes the city’s Lumberyard shopping center] are hindered from using prime on-street parking,” wrote Public Works Director Bob Brager, in a staff report.
Over the course of several Public Works Commission meetings, according to Brager, the commission determined that parking meters were not suitable for the Civic Center area and instead decided a less costly solution involving signage could be recommended for a six-month trial run.
There are 29 parking spots on that section of the roadway, according to city officials.
However, the city’s Local Coastal Program precludes the city from impeding or restricting public access to beaches, trails or parklands.
Brager indicated if the council wants to impose the limits then the staff will discuss the issues with the California Coastal Commission staff.
