‘Neighbor’ of Proposed Malibu Road House Urges Opposition to Project

• Slated for Planning Commission Agenda in January

BY BILL KOENEKER

A planned Malibu Road residence has drawn the ire of neighbors who claim they have the support of some surfers and others who contend the house would be located in the wrong place.
“As proposed, the development of this home will completely obstruct a scenic public viewing area as well public access to a popular beach and surf spot known as the Colony, and the primary views of numerous residents,” wrote Oliver Damavandi in a mass emailing to local media and civic groups and leaders.
Davamandi is urging surfers and beach lovers to sign his petition “to help save views and public access to our beloved surf spot.”
Oliver is the brother of Olivia Damavandi, who is the public information officer for the City of Malibu. Their parents own a home on Malibu Road.
The city’s planning commission was scheduled this week to consider approving plans for the proposed two-story, 4,277 square foot single family home with an attached two-car garage, staircase to beach, swimming pool and spa on the roof deck, but postponed making any decision until Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.
Malibu attorney Frank Angel spoke during Monday night’s public comment period to what he said were many California Environmental Quality Act issues related to the project that have not been addressed.
However, Planning Commission Chair John Mazza said the action to delay consideration of the project had nothing to do with the petition campaign. “It was none of that,” he said.
Mazza explained the delay was due to a variance granted by the city council in 2010 that would run counter to what the planning commission was being asked to approve.
“We can’t vote for something different than what the city council approved,” he said.
